Indoor vs outdoor LED screens: how to choose for an event

Choose an outdoor-rated LED screen whenever rain, wind-driven moisture or strong daylight can affect the installation. Choose an indoor screen for a controlled, dry venue where finer pixel pitch, moderate brightness and quiet operation matter more. A marquee is not automatically indoors, and a screen behind glass is not automatically daylight-ready. Base the decision on the real environment, audience and production plan.

The practical decision criteria

Start with exposure. If rain can reach the display during installation, use or dismantling, the panels, power and data system need an appropriate outdoor design. Check the stated ingress-protection rating for both front and rear: an IP-rated face does not prove that connectors, rear access or supporting equipment can remain exposed. Wind separately affects the structure, ballast and stop-work procedure, so an outdoor panel does not make an installation weather-safe by itself.

Next assess ambient light. Indoor LED walls are normally designed for ballrooms, studios and exhibition halls. Outdoor products use higher-output LEDs and optical treatments to remain legible by day. More brightness is not always better. A very bright wall in a dark room can be uncomfortable, weaken perceived black level and complicate camera exposure.

This is a shortlist, not engineering approval. The product must also fit the required dimensions, pixel canvas, access route and installation method.

Brightness, pitch and image quality

Brightness is measured in nits, or cd/m². As broad starting points, rental indoor panels may offer around 800-1,500 nits, while daylight-capable outdoor panels may offer roughly 3,500-6,000 nits or more. Usable output depends on the product, condition, calibration, content, viewing direction and sun position. Plan brightness control instead of assuming maximum output all day.

Indoor cabinets often have finer pitches because audiences can stand close. Outdoor rental stock commonly has a wider pitch, although fine-pitch outdoor products exist. Pitch should follow the closest meaningful viewer and required resolution, not just the indoor/outdoor label. Outdoor cabinets can be heavier and need weather-compatible distribution. Indoor panels may be easier to integrate into scenic surfaces, but this varies by system. Check fan noise, power demand, floor loading, rear-service clearance and colour consistency against the venue and content.

Realistic event examples

A 5 m wide screen in a hotel ballroom. The nearest guests are about 6 m away, lighting is controlled and two cameras record presentations. Indoor LED is the sensible starting point. The supplier should still test the proposed pitch and processor with the cameras, confirm screen height from audience sightlines and avoid excessive brightness.

A brand presentation in a three-sided marquee. The roof provides shade, but an open side faces the weather and the event starts before sunset. Outdoor-rated equipment is usually the safer shortlist because rain can travel sideways and ambient light is high. Temporary structure, ballast and shutdown criteria need separate competent design. Compare ground-supported and flown screens before fixing the layout.

An evening screen in a city courtyard. Outdoor equipment is still required. Lowering brightness after sunset can improve comfort and camera results. Access, cable protection, noise restrictions and the support structure may drive the design as much as panel type.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating a roof or canopy as complete weather protection.
  • Selecting maximum brightness without considering night-time use or cameras.
  • Assuming an IP label covers the complete system, including power and signal.
  • Choosing very fine pitch before establishing viewing distance and content resolution.

Short FAQ

Can an indoor LED screen be used outside under a tent? Not by default. A tent may reduce direct rain but still admit wind-driven water, condensation and high daylight. The supplier and competent production team must assess the exact enclosure.

Is outdoor LED too bright for an evening event? It can be at full output. Suitable processing and calibrated panels allow brightness reduction, but low-level performance should be checked on the actual product.

Does outdoor LED always have worse resolution? No. Outdoor products come in several pitches. Finer outdoor pitch can increase cost, weight, power demand or availability constraints, so specify the viewing requirement first.

Which option costs more? Outdoor systems often cost more, but size, pitch, duration, access and labour can outweigh the category alone.

Limitations and technical validation

These ranges are planning references, not guarantees. Product data, cabinet condition, venue rules, weather, electrical design, camera settings and structural assessment can change the recommendation. Wind limits, ballast and suspension loads must be calculated for the selected system and site; never infer them from a generic article. No images are included because no approved media assets exist.
