Choose pixel pitch from the closest person who must see a clean image, then verify that the complete screen has enough pixels for the content and cameras. A smaller number, such as 2.6 mm, places LEDs closer together and creates more pixels in the same area. It can improve close viewing, but may add cost, processing and power without a visible benefit for a distant audience.
What pixel pitch tells you
Pixel pitch is the centre-to-centre distance between neighbouring LED pixels, measured in millimetres. A P2.6 panel has pixels approximately 2.6 mm apart; P3.9 is approximately 3.9 mm. Pitch is not screen resolution. Resolution also depends on physical size, so a large P3.9 wall can contain more total pixels than a small P2.6 wall.
For an estimate, divide screen width in millimetres by nominal pitch to approximate horizontal pixels. A 5,000 mm wall at 2.6 mm is roughly 1,923 pixels across; at 3.9 mm it is roughly 1,282. Confirm the real resolution from the selected cabinet layout because marketed pitch is rounded and cabinets use fixed pixel matrices.
The familiar rule of roughly one metre of viewing distance per millimetre of pitch is only a starting check. Content, eyesight, contrast, motion and tolerance for visible pixel structure affect the result. Cameras also evaluate the image differently from viewers.

These are common rental starting points, not universal limits. Product availability, venue, screen size and cameras can justify a finer or wider pitch.
Match pitch to content and screen size
Viewing distance alone is incomplete. Spreadsheets, small sponsor logos and software demonstrations need more pixels, or a redesigned layout, than live camera footage and large titles. Confirm the native pixel canvas before content production. Sending 4K video does not make a wall 4K; the processor scales the source to the wall's mapped resolution. Well-designed graphics can look excellent on a modest canvas.
Physical size matters just as much. Establish sightlines and aspect ratio with the screen size and viewing distance guide, then compare cabinet layouts at plausible pitches. A 5 m by 2.8 m P2.6 screen is approximately Full HD in width, subject to the actual cabinet matrix. Cameras need a separate test
A pitch that looks smooth to the eye can produce moiré on camera. Results depend on camera distance, lens, focus, sensor, shutter, frame rate, panel scan pattern, refresh performance and processor settings. A quoted refresh-rate figure alone cannot guarantee clean recording.
For streaming or close shots, test the intended camera chain with representative content. Changes to position, focal length, focus or shutter may help, but screen and camera teams should agree the workflow before show day. Include colour temperature, gamma, brightness and any synchronisation requirement.
Realistic selection examples
Conference keynote. A 6 m wall has its first row 5 m away; slides contain graphs and names. P2.6 or P2.9 may be sensible options, but decide from cabinet resolution and minimum text size. With larger labels, P3.9 may remain readable and reduce cost.
Outdoor music stage. The screen shows live camera images to viewers 20-40 m away. A weather-appropriate P4.8 or P5.9 product may give a strong result. P2.9 is unlikely to help if brightness, physical size or camera production is the constraint. Review the indoor versus outdoor screen guide.
Exhibition demo wall. Visitors stand 2 m from a 3 m display and read interface labels. Fine-pitch indoor LED may be justified, but test the actual UI. Mounting depth and access also matter; compare support structures.

Short FAQ
Is P2.6 always better than P3.9? No. P2.6 provides more pixels at the same size, but P3.9 may look equally effective at the planned distance and be more economical or available.
What pitch do I need for 4K? Pitch alone cannot answer that. A 4K wall needs roughly 3,840 by 2,160 physical pixels, so dimensions also matter. Many event walls use lower native resolution and scale 4K sources successfully.
How close can viewers stand? There is no single cutoff. Use the distance rule to shortlist options, then inspect representative content at the closest planned position.
Can cameras film any rental LED wall? They can film it, but the result may show moiré, scan artefacts or colour differences. Camera-critical work needs a product-specific test.
